Fair trade is a movement that seeks to promote social and environmental sustainability in the production of goods, including sugar. Several organizations in Brazil, such as the Coopfam (Cooperative of Family Farmers of Poço Fundo and Region) and Coopersanta (Santa Rita do Sapucaà Agro-Extractive Cooperative), have received Fairtrade certification for their sugar products. These organizations are comprised of small-scale farmers who have come together to create a sustainable and fair supply chain.

Brazil is a major player in the global sugar industry, accounting for a significant share of global sugar production. Sugarcane is the primary raw material used for sugar production in Brazil. The main sugarcane-growing regions are located in the states of São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Goiás, and Mato Grosso do Sul.
